Sounds of Silence is a festival of silent films and live music which presents early silent cinema masterpieces with cutting edge contemporary music. The musicians who collaborate with our project are among the top in their game. They are a group of local Dutch and multi-national talents that make music in varied genres such as classical, jazz, electronic, experimental, and dance music. The music they create is composed and made especially for the festival, and will be performed live alongside the films..

We are delighted to announce the second edition of the festival, coming to The Hague in February 5-7, 2016, sponsored this year by Gemeente Den Haag and hosted by De Nieuwe Regentes.

Justin Christensen / Listening with your eyes: the emotional interplay of sight and sound
Borrowing from animal ethology, there seems to be survival benefits for the integration of the multimodal experience.  Since our brains are so powerful at condensing experience, and our conscious experience is so limited in how it can bring together competing narratives, different modalities of perception shape each other in our unconscious and arrive fully formed in our conscious experience.  This greatly limits perceptual disagreements which could be a survival hazard.  I will discuss the implications of such an unconscious multimodal integration, and how these strategies have been used by artists to further their goals.

Patricia Pisters / Seeing with your Ears: On Blind Photographers and Other Sound Locations
There are many ways of seeing beyond the reach of the human eye. In this lecture Patricia Pisters discusses how we can see and feel sounds by referring to the worlds of the blind photographers in several films and art works that deal with alternate ways of perception. The lecture will address questions of becoming-animal and discuss the territorializing and deterritorializing qualities of sound and music.

The aim of Ways of Seeing is to reflect on the role that vision plays in the current concert ritual, redefining some of the taken for granted parameters into a refreshed and challenging setting, both from the perspective of the audience and performer.

Ensemble Modelo62 new exciting production enhances the concert experience by employing the power of sight. Sight as image and inspiration for sound, sight as accompaniment to hearing or sight as a raw sense. Four works, out of which three were commissioned by the ensemble, revolve around this concept:

19:30 The General / Oğuz Büyükberber, Ilya Ziblat, Carlos Ema and Luis Mora
The General (Buster Keaton, 1926) Buster Keaton directed and plays the main character in this masterpiece, which follows a Southern railway engineer who has "only two loves in his life” -- his locomotive and the beautiful Annabelle Lee. When civil war breaks out, the love story turns into an action film, while of course retaining the comical flow. 

The General is an epic of silent comedy, one of the most expensive films of its time, including an accurate historical recreation of a Civil War episode, hundreds of extras, dangerous stunt sequences, and an actual locomotive falling from a burning bridge into a gorge far below. This is one of Kiton’s best, voted one of the 10 greatest films of all time in the authoritative Sight & Sound critic poll.

Music by Oğuz Büyükberber, Ilya Ziblat, Carlos Ema and Luis Mora The unique live free-Jazz music for The General captures the motion, physical humor and virtuosity of this masterpiece. The sonic palette is exclusively instrumental, taking the traditional jazz quartet as its main starting point: a reed instrument, piano, and a rhythm section. The music goes far beyond any stylistic reference, but the ideas of instrumental virtuosity, improvisation and upbeat tempo remain as a compositional thread throughout the performance. The musicians, who feel at home with improvisation much as with performance of composed scores, engage themselves in a journey which goes beyond the limits of music. Exploring sounds, textures, and various modes of interaction between the players themselves and between them and the film, this is guaranteed to be an original and thrilling experience.
