The Hourglass Sanatorium (Wojciech Has, 1973)
A poetic, visually refined journey through the convolutions of time as experienced by a young man who takes a train to visit his dying father in a sanatorium. The Hourglass Sanatorium is a surreal assault on the senses and perhaps one of the most beautifully shot Polish movies ever made. It is based on the remarkable collection of stories 'Sanatorium under the Sign of the Hourglass' written by Bruno Schultz, which it revives on screen with elaborate, extraordinary set-pieces and unusual atmospheric flair.
