DNR Filmclub December program: Tribute to Satyajit Ray

During December we’ll screen three masterpieces by the Indian/Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray. His films demonstrate remarkable observations on the human nature and subtle handling of characters and situations. With a rare cinematic style which blends intellect and emotion, Ray’s films are controlled, precise and meticulous, yet they evoke deep emotional response. The worlds of art, commerce, politics and religion are intertwined in his films with a gamut of moods, often in one and the same film, ranging from tragedy to farce.  According to Akira Kurosawa  “Not to have seen the cinema of Satyajit Ray means existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon."

The Goddess (1960)
A young woman is deemed a goddess when her father-in-law, a rich feudal land-lord, has a dream envisioning her as an avatar of Kali.

In some ways "Devi" is the most explicitly Eastern of Satyajit Ray's films: manifest in the depiction of Hinduism and the ways in which it penetrates all aspects of Indian life. It's a film that bears all the hallmarks of Ray's best work: gracefulness, exquisite pacing and composition, love for his characters and a deep regard for the power of silence to tell a story.
