GROTE ZAAL | Online €5 | Kassa €6

A hopeful morality tale and a commentary on the identity of the modern Indian woman.

DNR Filmclub December program: Tribute to Satyajit Ray

During December we’ll screen three masterpieces by the Indian/Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray. His films demonstrate remarkable observations on the human nature and subtle handling of characters and situations. With a rare cinematic style which blends intellect and emotion, Ray’s films are controlled, precise and meticulous, yet they evoke deep emotional response. The worlds of art, commerce, politics and religion are intertwined in his films with a gamut of moods, often in one and the same film, ranging from tragedy to farce.  According to Akira Kurosawa  “Not to have seen the cinema of Satyajit Ray means existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon."

The Big City (1963)
Satyajit Ray’s first portrayal of contemporary life in his native Kolkata follows the personal triumphs and frustrations of Arati (Madhabi Mukherjee), who decides, despite the initial protests of her bank-clerk husband, to take a job to help support their family. With remarkable sensitivity and attention to the details of everyday working-class life, Ray builds a powerful human drama that is at once a hopeful morality tale and a commentary on the identity of the modern Indian woman.
