Post Apocalyptic cinema - Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)

GROTE ZAAL | Online €5 | Kassa €6

Japanese animation masterpiece; the young princess Nausicaä struggles to preserve life.

The opening of the new year under the sign of the recent election in the USA inspired this month’s post apocalyptic film selection. We will show three films directed by a South Korean, Austrian and Japanese directors, each with its own take on life after the apocalypse.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (Hayao Miyazaki, 1984)
This masterpiece from Japanese animation genius Hayao Miyazaki is set 1000 years after a huge war destroyed civilization and left it swarming with giant insects. The plot follows a young princess, Nausicaä, who sets out to prevent a powerful kingdom from destroying a jungle of gigantic insects.

Everything that would go on to define Miyazaki as a filmmaker in his later years can be glimpsed in this thrilling and beautiful film: the environmental and anti-war themes, the vast and detailed world-building, the musical cues from Joe Hisaishi. And despite its premise, this is a post-apocalyptic outing that also manages to be uplifting.

- In Japanese with English subtitles.
