Festival rond het hedendaagse Roemenië

Za 28 okt | 12:30 | GEBOUW | Diverse prijzen

Film & Experiment

The festival Spotlight: Romania is a showcase for contemporary Romanian cinema taking place every year in The Hague. With each edition we aim to reveal to Dutch audiences other angles of the creative and vibrant nowadays Romania.

The third edition, Spotlight: Romania.3, is dedicated to alternative cinema, to directors who engage in a type of filmmaking which is regarded as different than the established Romanian New Wave.

This year’s special side programming will present a selection of short films and video art in collaboration with Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival. We also teamed up with our friends at Kinodiseea International Children Film Festival with whom we are making the Kino and Cake film morning for children, teenagers and parents.

Spotlight: Romania is a project by EASTWARDS, an independent cultural initiative promoting contemporary Eastern European art and culture in the Netherlands.

A railway chief delays a shipment of weapons for NATO forces during the Kosovo War in 1999.
Directed by Cristian Nemescu
Cast: Armand Assante, Rasvan Vasilescu, Maria Dinulescu, Ion Sapdaru, Andi Vasluianu
Comedy. 2006. 155 min.

During the war in Kosovo, in 1999, in a small Romanian village, the chief of the railway station stops a NATO train transporting military equipment. The transport, supervised by American soldiers, is crossing Romania without official documents, based only on verbal approval of the Romanian government. The arrival changes the place into the village of all opportunities.

Cristian Nemescu (1979-2006) wrote and directed five short films, nearly all awarded at domestic and foreign festivals. Regarded at the time as one of the most promising young Romanian directors, he then moved on to his first feature film, California Dreamin'. Tragically, the young director and the film's editor died in a car accident just before finishing the final cut of the film. The producers decided to premiere the film in a version that was believed to be the closest to the director's intention, and added the subtitle 'endless' referring to the film not having been finished.

In the Press:

Today, revisiting Nemescu's posthumous debut feature one thing's for sure: the film's seduction and electrifying rock 'n roll vitality - far removed from the stripped-down realism of most of New Romanian Cinema's big hits - remain unaltered. (Lincoln Centre Film Society, New York)

California Dreamin' is a rambunctious, closely observed comedy of cultural collision (New York Times)

Nemescu's promising young voice will be sorely missed, not only in Romanian cinema but also on the international scene. (TimeOut)

Festivals and awards:

Cannes 2007 (Un Certain Regard Award), Karlovy Vary 2007, Tokyo 2007, Salonic 2007.
