Heights and the lows of the jazz legend Charlie 'Bird' Parker. (1988)

April: Afro-American month
During April we will screen films by and about African-Americans, ranging from art house to blaxploitation, all these films  have in common a subversive undertone and much coolness on the surface.

Bird (Clint Eastwood, 1988)
Director Clint Eastwood, a well-known, long-standing jazz aficionado, delivers a compassionate portrait of jazz visionary Charlie "bird" Parker. Charles “Bird” Parker  (played by Forest Whitaker) was one of the great fountainheads of jazz, a creator of bebop whose improvisations and joyful discoveries on the saxophone created a sound that is absolutely distinctive. He stood as a bridge between the swing era and the cool, modern jazz of the 1950s, and even as his career collapsed into disarray, his influence continued to grow. “Bird” depicts both the heights and the lows of this jazz legends, an ambitious and complex movie which contains a lot of great imagery and music.
