An allegory of Romanian history, multiculturalism and war. Based on the best-selling novel by Petru Dumitriu.

Lucian Pintilie (1933 - 2018) was a Romanian-born director with a career spanning theater, opera, film and television. His influence caused him to be credited as the “godfather” of Romanian New Wave cinema and a maverick in his own right but the openly dissident art he created under the Communist regime meant that he was forced to go live in exile in France. However, he returned to Bucharest after 1989 and continued to make movies critical of social issues. In 2012, the prestigious MOMA New York presented a retrospective of Pintilie’s work with the following introduction: “One of Europe's finest filmmakers, Lucian Pintilie creates corrosive cinema that is at once original, ferocious, and hopeful.”

An Unforgettable Summer

As a result, the cosmopolitan family is reassigned to a dark and dangerous outpost on the frontier between Bulgaria and Romania where their relationship and humanity are severely tested.
