A tribute to the master of suspense: Alfred Hitchcock

Hitchcock’s monochrome masterwork

A Phoenix secretary embezzles $40,000 from her employer's client, goes on the run, and checks into a remote motel run by a young man, the psychopathic Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) under the domination of his mother.

Hitchcock’s monochrome masterwork, a blistering exercise in morbid, mind-blowingly manipulative horror, was a rude shock after years of suave, sophisticated, highly-polished colour thrillers from the Master of Suspense. “The most morally unsettling film ever made” is a subversive disruption of conventional audience identification that showed Hitchcock’s mastery of our reactions, as well as an implicit indictment of our voyeurism. A film which remains startling to this day.
