Metropolis - Rintaro (2001)

GROTE ZAAL | Online €5 | Kassa €6

A masterpiece, known as one of the greatest animated movies.

After many black and white films we showed during February, it’s time to pop up the screen with some color! Nothing is more fitting than dedicating March to beautiful animation films –all from different countries, periods and styles.

Metropolis (Rintaro, 2001)

Kenichi and his uncle Shunsaku Ban must find the mystery behind robot girl Tima.

Japanese animation masterpiece with astounding aesthetics which has more than just a title in common with Fritz Lang’s 1927 early classic of science fiction. Though scripted by “Akira” director Katsuhiro Otomo from Osamu Tezuka’s 1949 manga of the same name, it builds upon the same conception of a futuristic city space divided into different zones and levels for its various functions, and for the classes of the inhabitants who live and work there: the rulers and thinkers above ground, the servers and workers below, and traffic between the various levels restricted. Beside its exceptional imagery and surprising New Orleans Dixieland jazz soundtrack, Metropolis manages to successfully integrate the more intellectual elements into a story whose primary power derives from its balance of love and adventure.

In Japanese with English subtitles.
