GROTE ZAAL | Online €5 | Kassa €6

An immersive cinematic experience and a film of elemental power.

DNR Filmclub December program: Tribute to Satyajit Ray

During December we’ll screen three masterpieces by the Indian/Bengali filmmaker Satyajit Ray. His films demonstrate remarkable observations on the human nature and subtle handling of characters and situations. With a rare cinematic style which blends intellect and emotion, Ray’s films are controlled, precise and meticulous, yet they evoke deep emotional response. The worlds of art, commerce, politics and religion are intertwined in his films with a gamut of moods, often in one and the same film, ranging from tragedy to farce.  According to Akira Kurosawa  “Not to have seen the cinema of Satyajit Ray means existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon."

Pather Panchali (1955)
A depiction of rural Bengali life in a style inspired by Italian neorealism, this naturalistic but poetic evocation of a number of years in the life of a family introduces us to little Apu and the women who will help shape him. With resplendent photography informed by its young protagonist’s perpetual sense of discovery, Pather Panchali, which won an award for Best Human Document at Cannes, is an immersive cinematic experience and a film of elemental power.
